Your Questions About the Novel and Writing Process
What inspired the setting of your novel?
I became intreged by the Savannah ghost story about Alice Riley, a sixteen-year-old Irish indentured servant that is accused of murdering her master.
How do you approach historical research for your novel?
I immerse myself in historical texts, visit archives, and consult with historians to ensure authenticity and depth in my storytelling.
What challenges do you face while writing historical fiction?
Balancing historical accuracy with engaging narrative is challenging, as is ensuring that the characters’ voices resonate with modern readers.
How do you develop your characters?
I created detailed backstories and motivations for each character, drawing from historical records and my imagination to bring them to life.
Why did you choose to write about an Irish indentured servant?
I became fascinated by the courage and strength it had to have taken for Alice to have gotten on a ship to a new world where she faced immense adversity and prejudice. How many of our ancestors got here the same way?
What role does the supernatural play in your novel?
Honestly…there isn’t any supernatural in this novel…this is about real people living real, complicated lives.
How do you handle writer’s block?
When faced with writer’s block, I take a break to clear my mind, revisit my research, or brainstorm with fellow writers for fresh perspectives.
What message do you hope readers take away from your novel?
I hope readers gain an appreciation for the complexities of history and the enduring power of the human spirit to overcome adversity.
